Ten questions cannot score you

They tell you whether this section feels hard. A score needs all four sections and enough questions to separate a run of bad luck from a real gap. The diagnostic is 30 questions, free, and it returns a section-by-section report with the points-per-hour table.

These ten questions are mixed in the same proportions as the real Mathematics section and scored the same way. The section itself is 38 questions in 57 minutes, 34 of which count. What follows is what it tests, where marks actually go missing, and how to run the clock.

What the Mathematics section is

Mathematics is the slowest section on the TEAS 7 at 90 seconds a question, and the second smallest by share of your score.

Four of the 38 are unscored pretest items being trialed for future forms. They are not labeled and they sit anywhere in the section, so treat every question as if it counts. The other 34 divide into two sub-areas, close to evenly:

Personal calculators are not allowed — not graphing, not scientific, not the one on your phone. Plan around what a four-function calculator lacks: no parentheses, no memory, no order of operations. It takes keystrokes in the order you press them, so you supply the order and write intermediate values down. Sections are timed separately too, so minutes saved on Reading do not carry into Mathematics.

What is actually tested

Numbers and algebra — 18 scored questions

Arithmetic with integers, fractions, decimals and mixed numbers, under order of operations. Converting between fractions, decimals and percents, and comparing and ordering them. Estimation and rounding. Ratios and proportions, unit rates and best-buy comparisons. Percent problems of all three shapes: part of a whole, what percent one number is of another, and percent change. Solving one-variable linear equations, and the step before that — turning a sentence into the equation. Inequalities, absolute value, exponents and square roots at an arithmetic level.

Translation is the underrated part. Most of these items are one line of algebra wrapped in two lines of English, and the marks go missing in the wrapping.

Measurement and data — 16 scored questions

Unit conversion within metric, within US customary, and between the two — length, mass, volume and temperature. Dimensional analysis, meaning writing the conversion factor so the unit you want to lose cancels. Perimeter, area, circumference and volume of common shapes, the Pythagorean theorem at a basic level, and scale drawings. Reading bar, line and circle graphs and tables. Mean, median, mode and range, and the shape of a distribution. Identifying independent and dependent variables, and reading positive, negative or no correlation off a scatterplot.

Much of this sub-area is reading rather than calculating. The numbers are handed to you; the question is whether you read the units and the axis correctly first.

The mistakes that cost the most marks

Every one of these has a matching distractor waiting in the options.

Percent change divided by the wrong base. Percent change is always the difference over the original value, never the new one. A supply that falls from 250 boxes to 200:

change   = 250 − 200 = 50
percent  = 50 ÷ 250 = 0.20 = 20% decrease

Dividing by 200 gives 25%, and 25% will be on the screen as an option. The word to watch is from: whatever follows it is the denominator.

Dividing by a fraction without flipping. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal:

3/4 ÷ 1/8  =  3/4 × 8/1  =  24/4  =  6

Six, not 3/32. Dividing by a number smaller than 1 makes the answer bigger, so if your answer shrank, you did not flip.

Converting in the wrong direction. One kilogram is 2.2 pounds, so a 154-pound patient is 154 ÷ 2.2 = 70 kg. Multiplying gives 338.8 kg, which is not a plausible human being. Ask which unit is bigger before you touch the calculator: fewer of the bigger unit, more of the smaller one.

Using the diameter as the radius. A circle given as 10 cm across has a radius of 5, so its area is π × 5² ≈ 78.5 cm², not π × 10² ≈ 314 cm². The error is a factor of four every time, and the factor-of-four answer is always on offer.

Rounding too early. Round once, at the end, to whatever the question asks for. Round an intermediate value and then multiply it by 12, and the answer drifts far enough to land on a wrong option.

Pacing: what 90 seconds actually buys you

Ninety seconds is generous for a percent question and tight for a multi-step conversion, which is the whole pacing problem: the average only holds if you bank time on the short items rather than spend it.

Two checkpoints are enough. At the halfway point in time — roughly 28 minutes gone — be at question 19 or later. At 45 minutes, be at question 30, leaving 12 minutes for the last eight and anything you set aside.

The rule for abandoning a question: if you cannot see the setup within about 20 seconds, you will not find it in the next twenty. Put down your best estimate and move — nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so a blank is a certain zero where a guess is one chance in four. One four-minute question costs three easy ones later, and that trade decides more scores than any gap in content. If your form allows flagging and returning within the section, flag it; check how navigation works on the version you are booked on, since it differs between forms.

How to prepare for this section

Mathematics is 22.7% of your total score, so unless your own results say otherwise it deserves roughly that share of your study hours — not the half students who dislike math give it, and not the tenth students who like it give it. Time follows the blueprint first and your weaknesses second. The full section-by-section breakdown shows where the other 77.3% sits.

Drill setup, not arithmetic. The calculator handles arithmetic. What it cannot do is decide which number goes on the bottom of the fraction, so write the equation before computing anything, then substitute the answer back to check — ten seconds on a four-option item, and it catches every sign slip.

Estimate first, check units last. If the exact answer is nowhere near your estimate, the setup was wrong rather than the button-pressing. If the question asks for milligrams and your answer is in grams, that is a trap.

Time your practice from the start. Untimed practice teaches the content and hides the pacing problem until test day, which is the most common way a prepared student scores below what they know.
